FOR THE second year running Campion College has mopped up most of the Government scholarships offered to the most outstanding students in the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT).
A list of the scholarship recipients released by the Ministry of Education yesterday showed that students who will be attending Campion got half of the 28 Government scholarships which were on offer. Last year, the school received 18 of the 28 scholarships which were awarded.
The other 14 Government scholarships went to students who will this September be attending Immaculate Conception High (6), Ardenne High (2), St. Andrew High (1), St. Jago High (2), Herbert Morrison Technical (1), York Castle High (1) and Manchester High (1).
The 28 Government scholarships were divided equally between male and female students. Acceding to the Ministry, 45,158 students sat the exam this year compared to 39,748 last year. This reflected a 10 per cent increase. The results of the GSAT were issued to schools between Thursday and yesterday. The exam, which replaced the Common Entrance, tests the aptitude of students entering the high school system from primary and preparatory schools.
Lincoln Moore of Marlie Mount Primary and Melecia Wright of Howard Cooke Primary are the top male and female performers, respectively. Moore will attend Campion College and Wright will go to Montego Bay High School. Both students, were awarded the Scotia Bank Jamaica Foundation scholarships.
The prestigious Marcus Garvey Scholarship, George William Gordon Scholarship, and Paul Bogle Scholarship were awarded to three boys. They are Anthony Alexander, Phillip Clarke and Rayon Barrett, respectively. Alexander, who attends Ewarton Primary, will go to Ardenne High, while Clarke, who is a student at Ocho Rios Primary, will head off to Ocho Rios High. Barrett, who attends Airy Castle Primary, will go to Morant Bay High this September.
In the girl category, Schade Stanton of Corinaldi Avenue Primary got the Top Performer for the County of Cornwall. She will attend Montego Bay High. The Top Performer for the County of Middlesex and the Top Performer for the County of Surrey went to Milissa Knight of St. Catherine Primary and Natasha Henry of Prembroke Hall Primary, respectively. Knight will attend St. Catherine High while Henry will go to Holy Childhood High.
Chanice Francis of Dunrobin Primary is the recipient of the J.A.G Smith Scholarship while Melissa Lindo of Mandeville Primary and Junior High received the Aubrey Phillips Memorial J.T.A Scholarship. Francis will go to Immaculate Conception High while Lindo will attend Manchester High.
Ten boys and girls were awarded Scotia Bank Scholarships for Inner-city Schools while 12 others received Blue Cross of Jamaica scholarships for students of civil servants. Six students received Horlicks Scholarships.
