Pay up or face court, says NWC

WESTERN BUREAU:

A NUMBER of residents in Western Jamaica have been hauled before the courts by the National Water Commission (NWC) to answer charges of trespassing upon the works of the agency, and unlawful usage of water.

The Commission said in a continuing drive to ensure that all persons supplied with treated water pay for the service, it will seek to remove illegal connections from its water supply network, and recover charges for water supplied.

A release from the NWC said they have successfully prosecuted eight cases during the month of May while another 52 cases are pending in the courts.

Another 158 delinquent customers in the parishes of St. James, Hanover, Westmoreland and Trelawny were issued with letters for settlement of arrears, failing which court action will be taken by the NWC.

Investigations carried out by the NWC last month also identified 21 other water supply connections not legally registered on its billing system.

The water agency has invited the public to report all suspected cases of breaches by calling its Control Centre.
