Banks, businesses expect to reopen today

AFTER THREE days of protests, lock downs and disorder, most large banks and businesses are expected today to open for business at normal working hours.

Local soft drinks manufacturer Desnoes & Geddes (D&G) was among the first to indicate that working patterns could soon be closer to normal when it said that this morning's (Thursday) 6.00 am shift at its Spanish Town Road plant was expected to get under way as normal.

Bank of Nova Scotia Jamaica (BNS) managed to open up most of its branches outside of Kingston yesterday and hoped to see doors at its Kingston bank branches opening at 9.00 a.m. today.

NCB said it was also making every effort to open as it was concerned about the need for customers to access cash. Other banks such as CIBC and Citibank were also expected to open their doors this morning.

A Jamaica Manufacturers Association (JMA) spokesperson said its members plan to begin going back to work and hoped that normal working practices would resume fully on Friday.

The news comes after a number of businesses found themselves the subject of vandals and rioters' ire. BNS's Red Hills Road branch was ripped apart by looters and its glass door at its Liguanea branch was also smashed. NCB reported that sections of its Montego Bay branch were also shattered.
