SOME 165 entries were received in the 2000 Festival Fine Arts competition co-ordinated by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC).Thirty-five professionals entered a variety of works, including drawings, ceramics, sculpture/3D designs, fibre/leather arts and painting, while 13 artists submitted entries in the amateur category.
A special youth category - created for artists under 18 years - attracted works from 11 aspiring artists.
JCDC public relations officer, Pat Hyman, pointed out that some artists submitted more than one entry in the various categories, which accounted for the over 150 entries.
Judging of these entries began last week and the winning art works are scheduled to go on show on July 31 at the awards ceremony and exhibition at the Mutual Life Gallery, Oxford Road in New Kingston.
The exhibition, also scheduled to feature winners from the Festival Photography Competition, and will run for three weeks.
Last year, more than 130 entries were received in the competition, of which 41 were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals, as well as certificates of merits.
The fine arts competition is organised annually to promote artistic talent during the Festival/Independence celebrations. Several famous artists had their initial exposure through this competition.
