Big guns on display in CAJGC

Tym Glaser, Associate Editor - Sport

THE MOST promising golf talent in the region will be on display this week at the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship (CAJGC) at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club.

About 120 players will tee off on Tuesday in a three-day quest for individual and team honours.

Heading the charge will be defending team champions Trinidad and Tobago and regional powerhouse Puerto Rico who have won or shared the competition all but three times in its 12-year history.

However, the Jamaica squad - playing at home - has solid claims this year and could grab its first hold on the Hank James Trophy.

The hosts charge will be led by Martina MooYoung (Girls 13-15 section) who will front up for the senior team at the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships in Barbados next month, Ava Lee (Girls 16-18), Xavier Rose and Damian Spencer (Boys 16-18).

Lindsay Chang will team up with MooYoung in the 13-15 section while SuperClubs' Stacey Houslin will be Lee's teammate in the 16-18 grouping.

Dustin Chong and Christopher Bailey will fly the Jamaica flag in the Boys 13-15 bracket. That honours falls to Phillip Beck and Craig Hendrickson in the 12 and Under section along with Tiffany Terrier and Shannon Dickson in the girls' grouping.

Jamaica also has a strong contingent competing as individuals including Everal Bailey, Gerard Fontaine, Jason Hall, Lasandra Brown (16-18), Devon Raymond, Gillian Levy (13-15), Adrian Bradford and Amanda MooYoung (12 and under).

Most of the teams arrive in the island today and tomorrow is marked down as a practice day before the competition begins on Tuesday.

The competing teams are: Jamaica, Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, OECS, Trinidad and Tobago, US Virgin Islands.

Points are awarded daily with 10 going to the first team in each section, eight to second, seven to third and so on.
