'Way to go Merlene!'

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I TAKE great pleasure in writing to you and your readers today about our sprint queen - Merlene Ottey. The news of her innocence swept through South Florida like a hurricane out of the Caribbean. Some jumped for joy and some even wept. This is the news we were waiting for.

We were confident Merlene would be exonerated. In a sport where most compete unfairly, Merlene has always been one of the bright lights and a model for those of us who believe in fair competition. We also admire her for her resolve and "never give up" attitude.

When the tragic announcement came, Merlene assured us she was innocent and set out to clear her name. Despite all the mental anguish and agony, she stood up to the IAAF and eventually cleared her name. This was an insult to Merlene and I hope someone will be held liable.

I am sure this fiasco interrupted her preparation for the Olympics, after denying her a chance to compete in the World Championships. But, if I know Merlene, she will be ready for the trials later this month, and she will make the team, and will go to Sydney and do Jamaica proud as usual.

Way to go Merlene! Your fans and compatriots in South Florida salute you and wish you all the best as you wind down a successful and distinguished career.

I am etc.,

LEONARD WHYTE
