Live music at breakfast in Negril

WESTERN BUREAU:

HEARING STRING instruments and watching a live band perform at breakfast is quite unusual here in Jamaica, even more unusual is being serenaded by a group of Cubans in Jamaica.

Grand Lido Negril has introduced the concept of having a group of five talented musicians, Fantasia, from Mantanzas, near Varadero, Cuba, perform for guests at breakfast.

The group first came to Jamaica in 1998 for two months and liked it so much they returned for six months. Since then members have signed a contract with SuperClubs to stay on for two years.

"We have found many friends in Jamaica, but we don't wish to settle here permanently. We miss Cuba and our family and like the idea of going and coming", said group leader Alberto Garcia.

Fantasia has performed in Spain, Italy, Switzerland and Nicaragua.

"In Jamaica we play for another kind of tourist, mainly Americans. In Cuba we entertain mainly Europeans and Latinos. So our stay here is good for our music", said Alberto.

Every member of the group is considered a player of renown having been a part of one or more symphonic orchestras in Cuba. Alberto is a qualified conductor who has directed a number of operas in Europe. Since being in Jamaica, they have played at a number of society weddings, including SuperClubs' Vice-President for Public Relations, Zein Issa's wedding.

Guests of Prime Minister P.J. Patterson's daughter's wedding will recall the melodious music which emanated from the instruments played by these musicians.

Fantasia has also played for Prince Phillip of England during his last visit to the island.

Over the next two months, visitors staying at Sans Souci Grand Lido, Ocho Rios and Grand Lido Braco, Trelawny, should get to hear them play.
