St. Theresa's Prep - 2000 Quiz Champions

From left, Niché Fray (10), Appledene Osbourne (11), Coach Barrington Bryant, Allison Grant (12), Coach Cislyn McLeish, Bari-Ann Bryant (10), Tauseef Rose (11), Shermaine Brown (11) and Shaneil Webster (10). Missing is Anthony James (10).

THERE ARE eight of them, all under 12: Niché, Appledene, Allison, Bari-Ann, Tauseef, Shermaine, Shaneil and Anthony, all St. Theresa's Prep students - six girls, two boys.

As a team, they are united and proved this when seven of the eight passed GSAT exams, all for Campion and Immaculate. So, when Youth Link visited last Thursday, they were already ecstatic as this was their second time lucky. Earlier in the week the team copped the trophy for this year's Inter Primary/Prep School Challenge Quiz competition.

"It's a great feeling; at least when we graduate we'll leave something special for our school," said Allison.

But St. Theresa's is not new to the competition as they have remained on top since they entered in 1991, earning first places that year and in 1993, runner up positions in 1992 and 1996, and fifth place in 1995.

This year, they were smiling again as they took the KFC silver bowl, earned themselves a trip to Cuba from Super Clubs, a computer from Courts, a $5,000 gift voucher, and individual trophies.

Of course they thank coaches Cislyn McLeish and Barrington Bryant and the other teachers who had them working hard, studying subjects ranging from Social Grace to Religious Education "every day before school and after school, at lunch time, holidays and Saturdays" since October last year.

But the studying paid off as they conquered their harder subjects, Spanish and Maths, to top the 40-school knockout match in March, finally beating St. Catherine Primary 44 for 38.

"We learned how to be confident," said Niche (PUT ACCENT OVER THE 'E'). "At the end we were really nervous but we succeeded. Our school is really thankful to us, they were there when we needed them, and we made them proud."

- Petulia Clarke.
