Ja drubbed 13-0

By Melton Williams, Staff Reporter

HAVANA - A DAY after Jamaica failed their easiest test at the first men's America's Cup Hockey Tournament against Mexico, Chile showed no mercy yesterday and handed the Caribbean team a 13-0 hiding in their final preliminary game at the Antonio Maceo Stadium.

Nine goals between Luis Montegu and Alan Stein took Jamaica apart and handed them the third worst result of the eleven-team tournament, a qualifier for the 2002 World Cup in Kula Lumpur, Malifia.

Earlier Argentina cut down Peru 21-0 and Puerto Rico 14-0 and hosts Cuba turned back Peru and Barbados 14-0 each.

Montegu began his assault on Jamaica's goal in the fifth minute and within 12 minutes added three more to put Chile in control.

Stein converted his first of four goals in the 20th minute. Within four minutes, Stein added another and then conversions from Jorge Oryan (29th and 35th) and Montegu (33rd) gave Chile a healthy 9-0 lead at the break.

Afterwards, Stein with two second half strikes (42nd and 63), Sedastian Luders (36th) and one Juan Rodriquez (46th) completed the job.

Jamaica who completed their Pool B fixtures without a point, will play off with either Venezuela (two points), Barbados or Peru (1 point each) for 11th place on Saturday at noon (11 o'clock Jamaica time).

Cuba, who places Puerto Rico today, have twelve points, a position which will set up a semi-final play-off with either USA (9 points) or Chile (6 points). The Americans and Chile meet at 5 p.m. today to fill the runner up position in Pool B.

Canada, Pool B winners, have set up a semi-final play-off date with Argentina, which is a repeat of last year's Pan Am final which Canada won 1-0 to advance to the Olympics.

Although Jamaica came out of the preliminary round with the worse record, head coach Norris Davis saidt the tournament gave his team good exposure ahead of the Pan Am junior champions in Chile between October 11 to 21.

Davis said: "Today I started all the young players and it was deliberate. We are looking at development and building and a number of these young players will be going to Chile for the Under 21 tournament."

When 5-0 down, the coaching staff was forced to pull out first string goalkeeper Maceo Sibbles, who was a mere spectator as Chile scored their first five attempts at goal.

Yesterday's results: Cuba 10 Venezuela 0, Puerto Rico 2 Peru 1 (Pool A); Canada 13 Mexico 0, Chile 13 Jamaica 0 (Pool B).
