Super Golf Week

MORE than 500 local golfers are expected to drive, putt, hook and slice their way around the verdant Caymanas Golf and Country Club course from this Saturday through to next weekend to celebrate the club's Super Golf Week.

Although the National Amateur Trials start today, Golf Week does not officially begin until the first ball is struck on Saturday in the Smirnoff 36 tournament which will also incorporate the final two rounds of the trials.

Following the two-day Smirnoff event will be the SDF-sponsored Caddies Tournament on Monday, June 12.

Tuesday will be ladies' day with the Ueshima Stableford (7/8 handicap) event. The National Continental Stableford competition follows on Wednesday and the Johnnie Walker Two-Ball Scramble fills the Thursday fixture with Friday being a rest day.

The Week culminates with the Cable and Wireless Two Ball, Best Ball event on Saturday and the Life of Jamaica Am/Am on the final day.

General manager of the club, Whylie Lopez, said the coming events comprised the "premier week of golf on our calendar".

"Many of the events we have throughout the course of a year are principally geared towards the sponsorship and support of charities," Lopez said at a press conference at the club yesterday.

"In addition to that we host a number of Jamaica Golf Association qualifying events. As it happens ... the trials coincide with our major golf week event," he said.

"For the first time in a very long time, all of our top golfers are on the island to participate in the trials ... so we ought to have a really wonderful (Smirnoff) tournament and start to the week."
