Retraining on the firing range

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I HEARD the Commissioner of Police on Wednesday, May 31, announcing that he had to send the policemen who were recently involved in the shoot-out with gunmen on Mountain View Avenue back to the firing range to be retrained. It is indeed sad, and most irresponsible that our police force should have been graduating police men and women, who are supposed "to serve and protect" us, who cannot shoot.

I honestly believe that the Commissioner is over three years late in making such a discovery, as our country will recall the alleged shoot-out in April, 1997 in Tivoli Gardens, where policemen and military personnel battled 'gunmen' continuously for over two days, expending many rounds of ammunition during the process, without hitting a single gunman.

Think about it Mr. Commissioner. Should not those policemen and soldiers who were involved in that 'battle' be all withdrawn from frontline duties, to be retrained?

I am, etc.,

WINSTON MARAGH

Councillor,

Rocky Point Division

Clarendon
