Mission to India: - 50 IT professors for local stint

Paulwell

MINISTER OF Industry, Commerce and Technology, Phillip Paulwell, is to travel to India, later this year, to recruit 50 Indian professors to train Jamaicans in Information Technology(IT).

Mr. Paulwell's junior minister, Colin Campbell, told the House of Representatives on Tuesday, that the Minister would be leading a mission to India for the recruitment.

He said, however, that the Indian professors would be replaced by trained Jamaicans over a three-year period. Advertisements are to be placed in the local and overseas media to speed up the recruitment.

Mr. Campbell said that in pursuit of its objective of 40,000 jobs in the IT sector, Government's plans were well advanced for the delivery of 8,000 such jobs this year.

Cable & Wireless has provided an initial $90 million, as part of the Telecommunications agreement and discussions are being held with potential investors in the 2600 square metres of office space to be made available at the "silicon village," at the old Goodyear factory in Morant Bay.

He said that Cable & Wireless will also be supporting 100 scholarships and a revolving student loan of $100 million.
