Olympic team receives $2m boost
JAMAICA'S participation at this year's Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia received another financial boost when Blue Cross of Jamaica (BCJ) announced its $2 million sponsorship of the team at a press conference at the Courtleigh Hotel yesterday.
"In our partnership with the Olympics, we have extended the scope of our responsibility beyond the confines of our organisation to ensure the success of the team," said Dr. Henry Lowe, president and CEO of BCJ.
Apart from the monetary support, the BCJ will ensure each member of the team will receive the "Blue Plan" - an insurance health scheme that will cover their basic medical needs for one year.
"As sponsors, together we will provide world-class health insurance with gateways to outstanding physicians and medical facilities," Lowe said. "We regard our sponsorship of such events as an important long-term investment. This is so because we understand the value that sports represent at the personal, national and international level."
Lowe further said that in the months leading up to the Olympics "we will be hosting a number of Olympic Wellness Days in schools and communities across the island. A number of athletes and sports medicine practitioners will work with us to emphasise preventative health care and the promotion of healthy behaviour and lifestyles."
Michael Fennell, president of the Jamaica Olympic Committee, welcomed the sponsorship.
