Hurricane season begins
THE YEAR 2000 hurricane season officially began yesterday, June 1.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists in the United States say residents along the East and Gulf Coasts and in the Caribbean islands should brace for an expected above-average Atlantic hurricane season.
The forecast indicates stronger, longer-lasting storms are possible and warns some could pose a threat to land during the hurricane season.
But it said that yesterday there were no active tropical systems in the Atlantic and the Caribbean.
The names of the seasons hurricanes are:
Alberto, Beryl, Chris, Debby, Ernesto, Florence, Gordon, Helen, Isaac, Joyce, Keith, Leslie, Michael, Nadine, Oscar, Patty, Rafael, Sandy, Tony, Valerie and William.
