Town and Country Act violators to face court

MANDEVILLE, Manchester:

SEVERAL BUSINESS people in Mandeville, Manchester have been served with summons to appear in court for breaching the Building Code of the Town and Country Act.

The crackdown which started in October last year was intensified in January and several of the town's businessmen have since been targeted.

According to the Parish Council, for many years businessmen have started buildings in various parts of the parish without first getting the required permits and engineer inspection of their plans from the council.

Secretary manager of the Parish Council Ian Reid told The Gleaner that while most persons who are cited for building codes violations under the Town and Country Act have taken steps to correct the infractions, at least 14 had to be taken to court. Nine of them are scheduled to go to trial on July 31.

He said among the persons cited for breaches of the Act were people who would be regarded as prominent citizens of the town.

According to Mr. Reid, the crackdown is getting the full support of central government.
