15-year water problem to be addressed

GREGORY PARK:

RESIDENTS OF Gregory Park in Portmore, St. Catherine who have been facing ongoing disruption in their water supplies, have been assured that the problem would soon be addressed.

National Water Commission (NWC) Community Relations Officer for St. Catherine Southern Region, Camille Drake, told residents at a recent meeting there that one of the problems which has caused the disruption in supplies to the Gregory Park area was that supplies from the Tulloch Spring system was sent to the Kingston industrial belt in the days.

She said the NWC was addressing the situation as they have found some water in the Portmore area close to the Caymanas track. However, Miss Drake said it was a "brackish system" (salty water) which has to be treated, and when that came on stream, Portmore would have all the water it required.

Another problem, said Miss Drake, was that several pipes in the area could have deteriorated and therefore affected the free flow of water. She suggested that if the community could get the required pipes, then the NWC could give further assistance.

The residents said they have been without water for up to 15 years and would do whatever they could to address the situation.
