Lara gets green light

ST. JOHN'S, (AP)

STAR batsman Brian Lara has been passed fit to join the West Indies cricket team on its tour in England starting June 2.

West Indies Cricket Board executive secretary Andrew Sealy said yesterday that Lara and fast bowler Corey Collymore, who was out of action for eight months with a back injury, had been both given the all-clear for the tour.

Sealy stated that the board had 'received satisfactory written reports on Lara following medical and physical evaluations earlier this week.'

He added that the board was also satisfied with reports on Lara's 'consultations with a sports psychologist in the United States'.

After informing the board he was unavailable for the tour, Lara, 31, had a last-minute change of mind earlier this month and was chosen subject to his fitness.

The holder of the record individual scores in both Test and first-class cricket resigned as West Indies captain in February after what he termed "moderate success and devastating failure" in his two years at the helm.

A week later, he announced he was taking 'a break for a short period'. He has not played a game since early February and missed the successive home Test series against Zimbabwe and Pakistan.

The West Indies team leave for London on Tuesday, following the current third and final Test against Pakistan in Antigua. They start their first match against county team, Worcestershire, June 2 and play five Tests against England and a triangular series of one-day internationals in which Zimbabwe is the third team.
