Hinds smashes maiden century

Wavell Hinds

WAVELL HINDS hit his maiden limited overs International century as West Indies cruised to an easy 41-run win over Zimbabwe in the second game of the Cable and Wireless triangular cricket series at Sabina Park yesterday.

Having won Saturday's game by 87 runs, the West Indies now have two wins in two matches with Pakistan yet to take the field.

West Indies made 280 for three in 50 overs and then restricted Zimbabwe to 239 for eight in 50 overs.

Man-of-the-Match Hinds, with an unbeaten 116 off 125 balls shared in a rollicking fourth-wicket partnership of 125 off 88 balls with the 20 -year-old Chris Gayle, who hit a 45-ball unbeaten 58 to effectively push the West Indies score beyond the reach of the Zimbabweans.

Zimbabwe's batsmen made a gallant effort, but despite a 72-ball 57 from Stuart Carlisle and 52 from captain Andy Flower off 54 balls, the Africans never appeared to have a chance.

The pacy Reon King ended with three for 27 from eight overs and Curtly Ambrose, one for 19 from 10 overs.

Dropped at 82, Hinds whose previous limited overs' International highest was 65, was registering his first century in his 14th game.
