Tivoli, J. Grant in final

BRILLIANT GOALKEEPING by Tivoli's Jermaine Simpson enabled Manning Cup champions Tivoli Comprehensive to shrug off a sterling challenge from Kingston College to march into the Walker Cup final at the Harbour View mini-stadium yesterday.

Tivoli will play Jonathan Grant High which, although playing with 10 men, came from behind to beat Norman Manley 3-2 in the first semi-final.

Simpson saved two penalties in addition to his outstanding performance in regular and extra time, masterminding Tivoli's 4-1 penalty kick win after the teams played to an exciting 1-1 draw.

"I am really happy to win...to beat Kingston College again," said Dave Clarke, coach of Tivoli.

"I just don't want to miss out on the double this time. In one season we reached both finals (Manning Cup and Walker Cup). We won the Walker Cup but lost the Manning Cup. Now that we have won the Manning Cup, I don't won't to lose the Walker Cup," Clarke said.

"I just want to single out the goalkeeper Jermaine Simpson for his excellent performance," Clarke added. "He has proven to all that Luke Rose could have been removed from the football field in the Manning Cup but simply because I did not know the extent of the injury," Clarke said.

Stratton Palmer, coach of Kingston College, had no complain about his team's performance.

"It's a tough loss because it was a hard-fought game but when we play with 10 men and do well for over 65 minutes and to come out even with the Manning Cup champions, you had something there and with a little bit of luck the game could have gone either way.

After an evenly contested first half in which Tivoli created the most chances, the west Kingston school went ahead 17 minutes into the second half courtesy of a corner from Denroy Gordon. This found Jameel Thompson who headed past Kingston College's goalkeeper Kevin Lawson from inside the six-yard box.

Down 0-1, the purples were to be further hampered when goalkeeper Lawson was given marching orders by referee Peter Prendergast for bringing down Roland Dean who had only Lawson to beat in the 74th minute.

Despite playing one man short, Kingston College were never outplayed and got a scrappy equaliser when Kerrick DePass slipped the ball past Simpson in a six-yard box melee to send the game into extra-time.

With no goals coming in extra-time, penalties had to decide the game and it was in this stanza that Simpson proved his class.

He brilliantly saved DePass and Jermaine Ricketts' kicks, held Kevon Harris' first attempt but that kick was ordered re-taken by Prendergast and was eventually scored.

Nicholas, Andre Bailey, Lenford Campbell and Orane Simpson scored for Tivoli.

Earlier, a double strike from Wollery Wolfe (40th, 88th) and one from Omar Cummings (90th) gave Jonathan Grant High a surprise 3-2 win over Norman Manley.

Kevin Brooks scored both goals for Norman Manley in the 20th and 67th minutes.
