$100-m clean-up project set

GOVERNMENT WILL be spending $100 million on a general clean-up project across the island in the next two months under the "Lift Up Jamaica" programme, described by Prime Minister P.J. Patterson as one of four major initiatives to improve community and parish infrastructure.

The funds will be spent on the clean-up exercise between December 1999 and January 2000, the Prime Minister told the audience at the National Consultation on Local Governance at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston yesterday. Money is also to be spent repairing roads damaged by the recent flood rains.

    More redundancies in December at D&G


    OVER 100 EMPLOYEES are to be laid off by Desnoes and Geddes (D&G) in December, as it completes the shedding of its Pepsi subsidiary.

    The redundancies were indicated at the announcement of the sale in October, but UCASE (Union of Clerical, Administrative and Supervisor Employees), an affiliate of the National Workers Union, representing some of the workers, has complained that it will be "painful" to make the workers redundant in the middle of the Yuletide season.

    Millennium celebration plans launched


    IT COMES around every thousand year and as a once-in-a-lifetime event warrants a period of reflection and national celebration.

    On Tuesday at the Jamaica Conference Centre, Prime Minister P.J. Patterson launched plans for a year-long celebration of the new millennium. Called Millennium Celebrations 2000-2001, the Prime Minister urged Jamaicans to focus on the achievements of the nation during the period. Despite the difficulties, the passage of a thousand years warrants a period of national celebration, he said.
