Ramgeet lands four-timer

LEADING JOCKEY Andrew Ramgeet rode four winners at Caymanas Park yesterday, including 9-5 chance LADY BANGALORE who romped the 1800 metres feature race for the Winston Griffiths O.D. Trophy, in honour of the five-time champion jockey who was recently awarded the Order of Distinction for his contribution to horseracing.
Ramgeet, who is taking dead aim at George HoSang's all-time record of 167 winners in a season, also won aboard 4-5 favourite MAC THE KNIGHT in the first race, 3-5 favourite DOCTOR FEEL GOOD in race four and the American filly CIELO MYSTIQUE, a 1-5 favourite in the sixth. He thus ended the day on 129 winners, still needing 39 more to break HoSang's 1974 record with 17 racedays remaining.
LADY BANGALORE turned in a sparkling performance to win by 1 1/2 lengths from 5-2 shot POWER IN MOTION under former champion jockey Wesley Henry.
Ramgeet had her racing prominently in third as the 1997 Derby winner MR. LOVER LOVER led narrowly from the outsider TIMELY EXPLOSION, with POWER IN MOTION not far off and the evens favourite SLICK REGENT held off the early pace in the field of nine.
LADY BANGALORE inched forward along the rails to assume the lead from MR. LOVER LOVER. She galloped towards the home turn with POWER IN MOTION and the 30-1 outsider DIGNITARY in hot pursuit, but Ramgeet had a lot in hand and with SLICK REGENT making heavy weather of his task, it was left to POWER IN MOTION to carry the fight in the straight. But LADY BANGALORE would have none of it and kept on strongly to hold POWER IN MOTION at bay in the closing stages. DIGNITARY held on for third, while SIR MOHAN GOPAL (14-1) came late for fourth.
Owned by the Bombay Stud Farms and trained by Harry Jaghai, LADY BANGALORE, who romped the Oaks last year, will now be prepared for the November 13 Red Stripe Superstakes for which she is a leading contender by virtue of yesterday's win.
The Bombay Farms' Henry Jaghai said he was more than pleased with LADY BANGALORE's performance and is looking forward to the Superstakes with great anticipation.
"She must have a helluva good chance in the Superstakes after this performance", said Jaghai, who is also the breeder of LADY BANGALORE.
"This is the race we used to draw a line for the Superstakes and she came through with flying colours". Jaghai further stated that Trinidadian jockey Dale Whittaker has been booked to ride her in the Superstakes.
"My other horse SIR MOHANDAS BABA will also be coming over from Trinidad to run in the Superstakes and he will be ridden by Trinidadian champion jockey Rajpaul Rajkummar", he disclosed.
Later in the afternoon, INCISAL EDGE (5-2), ridden by Shane Ellis for trainer Richie Todd, showed how improved she is by winning the day's secondary feature for the Reca Trophy over 1400 metres by all of 6 1/4 lengths from the 99-1 outsider MERCEDES BOY, with Ramgeet's mount QUEEN OF BEL-AIR finishing third and the 6-5 favourite SPECIAL ENVOY unplaced.
Meanwhile, trainer Richard Azan, who obtained a license in early 1994, notched his 100th career win when 3-1 chance VOLCANE ran on strongly to win the sixth race over 1100 metres with Panamanian jockey Roger Moore aboard.
Azan, who trains exclusively for himself, has amassed total stakes of over $28 million, thanks to big race wins by the 1995 "Horse of the Year" DORVAL in the Derby, Superstakes and Governor's Cup that year and also LABEEB in the 1997 St. Leger.
