Good Vibes cling on to brakes
THE DOMINANCE of Patrick Smith, Arlington Reid and Andrew Myers was again on display at the National Stadium's veledrome yesterday as they highlighted the fourth track meet on the Jamaica Cycling Federation's (JCF) racing calendar.
Those performances were recorded in the absence of the competitive Good Vibes team which continued their boycott of the meets in support of teammate Peter Aldridge, who was summoned to appear before the JCF.
That scenario started during the second meet on August 15 when three Good Vibes cyclists were disqualified.
The cyclists - Clifton Cargill, Carlton Simmonds and Peter Aldridge - were disqualified from the Category One Devils race after they had occupied the first three places. The judges ruled that the riders used unfair tactics and awarded the race to Arlington Reid who had crossed the post in fourth place in that event.
Further, Aldridge was disqualified from the day's other Category One race.
Aldridge, according to the JCF's president Ken Cole, defied that ruling, took the track and refused to leave the starting line. Aldridge was then summoned to a hearing at the Sports Development Foundation (SDF) which should have been held last Friday, but Cole said that he failed to turn up.
Cole further stated that the Good Vibes team was not suspended from the remaining meets.
Cole said: "Aldridge's fate would have been known on Friday. We could not suspend him (Aldridge) from the other meets because a man is innocent until found guilty."
With just a few days to go before the JCF select a team for the two-day Sunshine Cycle Classic in Miami on September 25 and 26, the brilliance of Reid and Myers were on show in the two Category One races as each emerged victorious.
Reid continued from where he left off during last week's third meet to record another exciting win over arch-rival Myers; but Myers avenged that defeat in dramatic style later.
Reid caught Myers close to home in the Global Foods-sponsored one and a half-lap sprint in an exciting finish but went down over 10 laps. Ashek Wright continued his good run in the top class as on both ocassion he finished a close third in both races.
Although Reid, Myers and Wright continued their good run in the top class, they were overshadowed by Category Two rider Patrick Smith who recorded his second straight double.
Smith took the Devils, one of the most exciting races on the programme, over Sean Hyman and Hammean Walker. The Mandeville-based rider then returned to take honours over Robert Allen and Walker in a very competitive 10-lap race sponsored by Lynford (Tai) Hue.
In the Junior segment, Anthony Philpott and Ricardo Lynch came up trumps with a win each.
