Jamaica defeat T&T

NEW YORK, CANA - A SOLID half-century by former West Indies all-rounder Everton Mattis and a remarkable spell of medium pace by former Jamaica youth all-rounder Teddy Heirs steered Jamaica to a 49-run victory over defending New York Red Stripe champions Trinidad and Tobago at Brooklyn's Marine Park over the weekend.

Mattis, the Jamaica captain, batted resolutely for 51 in Jamaica's total of 177 all out in 39.2 overs.

Apart from 29 by opening batsman Dave Wallace and 19 each by current Jamaica batsman Tony Powell and former Jamaica youth opening batsman Rohan Alexander, the Jamaica lower order crumbled against the dexterous Trinidad and Tobago leg-spinning quartet of Premanath Ramnath (4-40), Dave Mohammed (2-32), Anand Dwarka (2-31) and Randy Baichan (2-31).

The Trinidadians were then dismissed for 128 in 32.3 overs with Heirs leading the Jamaicans to their second tournament victory, taking five for 27 in nine overs.

He received good support from former West Indies youth fast bowler Wayne Allen, who took three for 41 while Jerry Jumadeen topscored with 30.

In the other match played in Brooklyn over the weekend, Barbados registered their first victory of the season by crushing Bangladesh by eight wickets at the Seaview grounds.

Former national middle order batsman Livingstone Puckerin hammered 14 fours and a six in a pugnacious 94 as the Barbadians overhauled Bangladesh's 157 all out in 45.2 overs.

They took only 24.1 overs to reach their target, with Puckerin and Fabien Skeete putting on 123 for the second wicket. Skeete was unbeaten on 25.

Fast bowlers Wesley King (3-25) and Lowton Yarde (3-34) kept the Bangladesh in check off spinner Hubert Blackman grabbed two for 21. Sajid hit 55 in Bangladesh's innings.

The Windwards earned their first points of the season when the Pakistanis failed to show up for their duel at Seaview Grounds.
