MoBay street saga takes new turn

  • Officers moved

INVESTIGATION OF the forcible removal of street people from Montego Bay three weeks ago took a new turn, according a release last night from the Police Information Centre (PIC).

PIC said new information reaching the police had confirmed that policemen, members of the St. James Parish Council and other government agencies had been involved in the dead-of-night removal of the street people from Montego Bay to St. Elizabeth.

    The PIC stated:

"Commissioner of Police Francis Forbes has written to the Deputy Commissioner in charge of the newly established Special Investigation Bureau, Mr. Owen Clunie, instructing him to take over investigations into the forcible removal of street people from Montego Bay, St. James two weeks ago.

"The decision of the Commissioner to remove the officers comes in the wake of new information reaching the police, confirming previous allegations that members of the Force, Parish Council and other Government agencies were involved in the operation.

"In order to allow the investigation to proceed expeditiously, the following senior officers have been transferred. Senior Superintendent E.H. Rose, second in charge of Area 1 has been transferred to Area 3; Superintendent B.C. Burey, Commanding Officer in charge of the parish of St. James to the Staff College in Spanish Town; and Inspector Giddens in charge of Operations, transferred to the Kingston Central Police Division.
