  • Guardian Holdings wins portfolios of FINSAC-controlled insurance companies

    TRINIDAD WON yet another slice of Jamaican business yesterday. Insurance giant Guardian Holdings proved the successful bidder for the Pension and Annuities and the Individual Life portfolios of the three insurance companies up for divestment by FINSAC, Finance and Planning Minister Dr. Omar Davies announced in Parliament yesterday.

    Golding has politicians' debt plan


    NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC Movement (NDM) president, Bruce Golding, has suggested a strategy to recover and write-off money owed by public officials to FINSAC and, at the same time, ensure impartiality and transparency.

    In a news release yesterday, Mr. Golding said there should be full public disclosure of the current indebtedness of borrowers where the outstanding amount exceeds $5 million and suggested an across-the-board write-off of 50 per cent of the accrued interest.

    NWC grants customers amnesty

  • Those in arrears, illegal connections have until June 30 to get straight

    CUSTOMERS OF the National Water Commission (NWC) who are in arrears up to the end of last year, and those with illegal connections, have been granted an immediate amnesty to set their business straight.

    Backbenchers not taking salary scale imbalance lightly


    THERE WAS much talk about salaries in the House of Representatives yesterday, as backbenchers on the Government side voiced displeasure with their pay scale when compared with others in the private and public sector.

    Minutes after Member of Parliament for West Rural St. Andrew Vernon Robinson detailed the relatively low earnings of MPs with those of managers at different levels, his colleague from East Rural St. Andrew, Oliver Clue, disclosed the salary of the Technical Director of the national football programme Rene Simoes, causing a few raised eyebrows.

    Money 'safe as D&G', Sonia Jones told playwright


    PLAYWRIGHT LLOYD Reckord testified in court on Tuesday how attorney-at-law Sonia Jones told him money he gave her to invest was "safe as D&G".

    Reckord was giving evidence under examination by Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewelyn, assisted by Crown Counsel Laurel Gregg.
